Geothermal Energy For Homes: What Do You Need?

What you need to harness geothermal energy for your home will vary by system. Well-Connect is the simplest, most affordable way to harness geothermal energy and bring energy-efficient heating and cooling to your home. There is only one prerequisite for a Well-Connect system: a well. Any home with an existing well is a candidate for a Well-Connect geothermal heat pump.

Do I Need Ductwork for a
Well-Connect System?

There are three versions of Well-Connect: one for homes with existing ductwork and two for homes without existing ductwork. Homes without existing ductwork benefit from a self-ducted version (where a few supply ducts are added to the home) or a ductless freestanding unit. A quick pre-purchase visit to your home will allow our installers to determine which of these options will work best for you.

Well Capacity, Flow and Discharge

A key benefit of Well-Connect is that it does not require a high-water flow. A typical well can supply 10 to 15 gallons of water per minute, while Well-Connect only requires two gallons per minute. Typical well-based geothermal systems require 8 to 10 gallons per minute. This means that a Well-Connect requires a 75% lower water flow rate compared to other well-based geothermal heat pumps, making almost any well a free, infinite, renewable energy source. Water only flows through the system when the unit is in use, heating or cooling.

It’s important to note that all water that flows through the Well-Connect goes back into the earth as clean as it was before it passed through the system. The water is returned to the ground through a discharge pipe that is typically buried and not visible to the homeowner. This process takes place underground and will not result in any pooling or puddling. It is not piped to the existing septic or drain field.

Well-Connect is sized to match the heating needs of a home, which means less waste. As a result, Well-Connect runs longer cycles, which keeps the temperature in your home within one or two degrees of the thermostat setting, making it consistently comfortable.

An Infinite, Renewable Resource

Contrary to popular belief, a Well-Connect does not “consume” any water – water simply flows through the system and back into the ground. Further, Well-Connect uses 75% less water than comparable geothermal systems. For reference, the gallons of water required to flow through a Well-Connect to heat an average home for a typical Michigan winter is about half the amount of water required to water a lawn for a single summer.
